Scammed?

i had just gotten back from my Shanghai trip, was tired and weary and had gone to the gas station to fill up. An older looking Korean man drives around towards me and stops his car at a nearby pump, gets out and walks towards me. Immediately, even though i'm fatigued, my guards are up. The gas station is brightly lit so I am not afraid that I won't be able to get assistance in the event he was trying to rob me, but I have nothing of worth to rob. He asks if I am Korean, and I said No, Chinese. He then proceeds to try and explain to me in broken English his predicament. He had traveled from Rome, GA and was here for the weekend. His car had gotten broken into and his wallet had personal items had been stolen, so he had no money to return home. He was asking if I had any money, $5 or $100, something so that he could get some gas and be able to make it home. Now usually something like this sounds like a scam to me. And trust me, there are a lot of those in this world...just the other afternoon, someone had called posing to be t-mobile trying to scam me and I had not believed it. This guy could have been trying to scam out some money from me or he could really have desperately needed the money. To me though, it felt real and I sympathized with the guy. I only had $20 on me and to my name to claim. Without hesistation, I took it out of my bag and handed it to him. I told him that was all I had but it should hopefully be enough to help him along the way. He took it with gratitude and kept thanking me profusely. That felt good to be able to help someone who was in need. Now if he was scamming me, then I hope he goes to hell for preying on innocent citizens who are trying to do a good deed, but if he really and truly needed the help, then I hope the best for him and hope that he was able to make it home safely. I know that if that situation had ever happened to me, I would hope that someone would be able to show me the kindness that I showed him.
